Scarborough Leisure Village, which will be home to an eight lane 25-metre Olympic Legacy swimming pool and learner pool, a four-court sports hall, squash courts, a 60-station fitness suite, an aerobics studio and a new ground for Evo-Stick First Division North team, Scarborough Athletic Football Club, is progressing well thanks to the exceptional work undertaken by Wrenbridge Sport and Willmott Dixon who have been responsible for developing the scheme.

The Leisure Village is being developed by Wrenbridge Sport on land at the town’s former Weaponness coach park. Elsewhere on the site, Wrenbridge is also developing two state of the art educational campuses for Coventry University Scarborough Campus and Scarborough University Technical College.

In a joint statement, Cllr Tom Fox, the Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough and Cllr Derek Bastiman, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council said:

“Good things come to those who wait and what better way to kick off 2016 than to celebrate the start of this eagerly anticipated development. There have been those who said this project would never happen, but we and our partners have never lost sight of our ultimate goal, which is to create a first class leisure facility for local people and a new football ground for Scarborough Athletic Football Club and other sports and community clubs and groups.”

Richard Arnold, Director of Wrenbridge Sport, added:

“As development partners to the council, Wrenbridge is delighted that works on the new leisure village have progressed exceptionally well. We are looking forward to providing new community sports facilities for Scarborough as well as making a home for the football club back in the town a reality.”

Sport England is investing more than £30 million in National Lottery funding into innovative, large-scale, multi-sport facility projects such as Scarborough Leisure Village, which it has awarded £2.2m. Sport England has also provided the Olympic Legacy swimming pool for the development. Projects, such as Scarborough Leisure Village, are being delivered against a backdrop of local authority and national governing body priorities. The facilities supported through the fund carry the London 2012 Inspire Mark, a permanent celebration of their role in the legacy of the Olympic Games.

Charles Johnston, Sport England Director of Property said:Scarborough

“We are delighted to invest over £2.2 million of National Lottery funding in the Scarborough Leisure Village. Offering state-of-the-art sporting facilities, as well as becoming the new home of Scarborough Athletic FC, I am confident that upon its completion, the leisure village will become a real focal point for the town and no doubt inspire more locals to become active.”

On opening, the Leisure Village will be operated by Everyone Active, which is already working in partnership with Scarborough Borough Council to manage its current sports facilities in Scarborough and Whitby. The Leisure Village will replace the current sports centre on Filey Road and indoor pool on Ryndle Crescent.
