Wrenbridge Sport, a specialist business established by award winning property developers, Wrenbridge to focus on the sport and leisure related sector, are delighted to announce the completion of the Scarborough Sports village. In partnership with Scarborough Borough Council, the scheme comprises a 2,000 capacity stadium, which has enabled Scarborough Athletic Football Club to return back to the town after well over a decade of absence and includes a state of the art 3G pitch that will ensure year round use by all of the local community.
Formerly, Weaponess Park was a disused brownfield site which has undergone a major transformation primarily this includes the development of a new Leisure Village comprising a 4-court indoor sports hall, squash courts, gym, dance studio and community facilities alongside the stadium. In addition to this, the site boasts a new state of the art eight-lane swimming pool, which has been created using one of the training pools used for the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympics, demonstrating a continuing legacy from the Games for all of the UK.
Wrenbridge Sport have kept the local community at the heart of all their plans every step of the way. The overall development has included a further three separate sites within Scarborough for a combination of education, retail and residential uses funded with public funding from Sport England and the Football Association. These included a new University Technical College (UTC) for 14 to 18 year olds as well as a new Scarborough campus for Coventry University (CUSC). Both these sites opened at the start of the academic year in September 2016.
Richard Arnold, Director at Wrenbridge Sport commented:
“We are delighted to have successfully delivered the new Scarborough Sports Village for the town and wider region. We’re very proud that this has enabled the return of Scarborough Athletic FC back to the town and wish them every success in the future. However this project has been much more than just a new football ground and has been a long term partnership between Wrenbridge and Scarborough Borough Council that has delivered new community leisure facilities, enhanced education provision as well as new homes for local people.”
Over the past 5 years, Wrenbridge Sport has built a portfolio of over £250 million, consisting of 5 stadiums, 4 swimming pools, 3 sports halls, 2 cycle tracks, an ice-rink and a white water centre.
Jim Dillion, CEO of Scarborough County Council commented:
“Wrenbridge have worked closely with Scarborough Borough Council to enable the successful delivery of the Scarborough Leisure Village which not only brings Scarborough FC back to the town but now provides state of the art sports and leisure facilities for Scarborough. As enabling developers Wrenbridge have worked hand in glove with the Council to provide enabling development that has resulted in the successful completion of residential, retail and education facilities which include a new UTC and Scarborough Campus for Coventry University.
The whole development has been long and complex but through persistence, cooperation and hard work, Wrenbridge have managed to bring the whole thing to a fantastic successful conclusion of which Scarborough can now be very proud.”
