It comes as no surprise that Wrenbridge Sport are one of the finalists in the running for Property Week’s Deal of the Year Award 2018 for their York Community Stadium project.
The scheme located at Monks Cross just outside of the city centre, incorporates an 8,000 seat stadium for the football and rugby league together with a leisure complex sports hall, 25m swimming pool, gym, dance studio, climbing wall and outdoor artificial pitches. The community hub will be the first of its kind and will provide bespoke facilities for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Explore York Libraries and a local Cancer Trust.
In addition to this, Wrenbridge Sport is developing 60,000 sq ft of new retail, a 13 screen IMAX cinema and several restaurants that form a brand new entertainment complex for the City and provides the funding that ensures the stadium project can finally be delivered. Over £50m of private sector funding has been put into the project with £5m from the public sector, which is a fantastic result for the community and an exemplar as to how this type public project can be delivered.
Planning consent has been secured, archaeological works undertaken and a package of enabling demolition and ground works has recently been completed ahead of the main construction works starting on site
The project is a JV with York Council, being funded by Legal & General and took Wrenbridge Sport 4 years to knit together, including the pre-lets and completion by the leisure operators. The deal required over 30 legal documents being submitted simultaneously for it to be successful.
After suffering a major blow whereby the both the contractor withdrew and also the funding due to the Brexit vote, the c. £50m build contract is now being constructed and is due for completion in 2019 – in time for the football and rugby clubs to move in the following season!
It is no surprise that this deal is carefully constructed, maintained and implemented by Wrenbridge Sport has been shortlisted for “Deal of the year” at this year’s Property Week awards.
